The European Union has been a project for peace since its very beginning. The cold war separated Europe for more than 40 years. Luckily peaceful revolutions in 1989 and the following years led to an extensive integration process, but on
24th of February 2022 a new era began. Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine presented Europe with an entirely new situation. EU coordination of joint humanitarian and military assistance as well as sanctions against Russia have become a frequent topic at EU meetings. Aside from the increased security investments these new circumstances have opened new discussions - about collective security, European sovereignty and a European Defense Union. Joint European answers are required to secure Europe and to further deepen the integration process of European defense politics.
